  • Clay Sampler: for Youth | age 9-16

    Join us for a memorable, engaging, and rewarding four-week clay workshop. Throughout the session, you’ll focus on developing foundational skills as you explore several hand-building techniques—or try your hand at throwing on the pottery wheel. The first three classes will concentrate on shaping and refining your work using wet clay. Once your pieces have dried and been bisque-fired, the final class will be dedicated to glazing, where you’ll add color and personality to your finished creations. Whether you’re new to clay or looking to strengthen your skills, this workshop offers a rewarding creative experience from start to finish.     Students will learn how to build an armature, or support system, for an animal form. We will use aluminum foil, tape, newspaper, and discarded objects to build the mass of the sculpture onto the support. Then we will use wheat paste, newspaper and colored paper to add a smooth surface to the form of the animal. Finally, we will embellish the final form with bright colors of tissue, various papers, and polymer glues. You may work as an independent artist, or invite a sibling, parent partner, or friend as your assistant. This project will prepare you for those student projects your teachers may assign in school, like building a volcano! Paula will teach you lots of methods, tricks, and share resources.
